Mount Lemmon Area Homes for Sale. Mount Lemmon is the top level in the Santa Catalina Mountains, situated in the Coronado National Forest northern part of Tucson, Arizona. The Peak level is 9157 ft. It gets about 57 inches thick of snow yearly. Mount Lemmon obtained its name in respect and honor of the botanist named Sarah Plummer Lemmon, who trekked to the top of the mountain with the Native guides by foot during 1881.
Summerhaven is a town close to the top of the mountain. It is a summer season dwelling for a lot of people but there are some year round residents. There are several smaller cabins most of which were reconstructed just after the Aspen Fire of July 2003
Located at the summit is the Mount Lemmon Observatory, which was earlier known as the site of a USAF radar base of the Air Defense Command, and the property that previously kept a military emergency radar monitoring place for landing the Space Shuttle at the White Sands Missile Range.
Despite the fact that the military of the United States had a presence on the mountain for various years all their establishments have been discontinued and were provided to the United States Forest Service. The place and structures that makes up the Mount Lemmon Station Observatory are rented from the Forest Service by the University of Arizona.
Telescopes on the mountain are even now used for astronomical study these days by institutions such as the Catalina Sky Survey, and The Mount Lemmon Sky Center at the University of Arizona, and the University of Minnesota. The informative assets at the peak of the mountain make it a special research and teaching location.
