The Catalina Foothills School District opened its doors in 1931 and held it its first meeting in the garage with just nine students and a single teacher. In 1939, developer John Murphey sold 2.2 acres of land on River Road to Catalina Foothills School District for ten dollars, with an agreement that the property be used for a public school. That summer Joseph T. Joesler designed a two-room country school house which was later built by the Work Progress Administration. It was originally known as the River Road School, at present the building is now known as the Murphey Administration Center.
Today, more than 5,000 pupils are enrolled in the seven schools that comprise the Catalina Foothills School District. The superintendent also acts as the advisor to the board relating to academic matters, preparing and recommending budgets, using staff (susceptible to board approval), administering college services, solutions and programs, recommending boundaries, and applying guidelines and treatments steady with board policy.
